questions from telesilla, everyone's favorite meme

1. Is there any fannish activity that you once swore you'd never do but found yourself doing later on?

Reading RPS is probably it. Reading, writing, liking RPS. I felt really guilty about it at first, but I think I've gotten over that. Okay, I still kind of feel bad at times.

2. What do you like best about living where you do?

The sky - between heaven and Texas there are few things more incredible and beautiful. I'm also lucky to live in an oasis of liberalism for the most part. But it is the sky, and the wide open roads I miss the most in any other place. There's nothing like being on the road, with half the sky full of bright sunlight and a storm racing up the other side. Or the strangeness when the tornados come out, or sudden spring storms. The color of the light in the morning on a winter day, the sunsets over the Hill Country, the dust storms in the Panhandle, the night sky way outside of the city.

3.Are there little things you do--like taking a nice long bath or lighting candles or eating chocolate--when you've had a rough day and feel you need to pamper yourself?

I like to have a cocktail and smoke on the balcony, looking out at the trees. I like to shut myself in the bathroom with a book or a magazine, throw some bath bombs in the tub and stay there until the water gets cold. I like to curl up in a nest of blankets with some escapist fantasy novel. I think that pretty much covers most of it. I have to hash it out of my head before I can retreat and wipe my mind clean.

4. What one place of all the places you've never visited do you want to visit most?

Hard question, this one. I really, really want to go to Russia. I have this terrible interest and longing in the country. Their history amazes and intrigues me. Russia's history in the 20th century really did shape the entire world. I want to see Petersburg, hunt for the ghosts of the tsars. I want to see Moscow, with the weird mix of the Communist buildings, tsarist victory and the creeping 21st century. I want to see Lake Baikal, and imagine those royal families on their yachts, or Stalin on the beach. I want to see those giant Siberian skies. I want to see the strange, strange towns on the Pacific coast. I want to see this huge and incredible country that has inspired me so much.

5. What's your favorite LJ feature?

I love the filter settings, I have to say. While I try hard to remain very open here, there are some things that the entire world doesn't need to see. But I still want to share them with certain groups. The filters also make some of the blog conversation smaller, more like friends on the phone or around the table. As much as you can do that in the wired, I suppose.

You know the drill. Comment if you want questions.

I don't use the filters, when I had things I had to filter I never trusted them. Now I just don't keep people on my list if I'm *that* involved with them in RL. I have 3 people I've met through LJ that are vague social acquaintances now, 2 friends who'd hear this shit anyways who live far enough away that they aren't much drama.

Ask me questions!

I want questions.

And I also want to go to Russia. For all of those same reasons, plus the fact that I don't know nearly as much about the country's history as you do.

Question me! :)

I forget the photographer, but there's a great photo essay in a beautifully done book simply called Russia; it's fairly recent, I think. I gave it as a Christmas present to my future sister-in-law, and I guiltily leafed through it and was rather amazed by the pictures of the villages in the Steppes and in Siberia of how much everything has remained in the Stalin era. In particular, there's a picture series of an airport -- one building that is a wood-paneled, dingy place with a few scruffy chairs and a black and white TV with a photo of Lenin still on the wall above the main entrance. Stark. Ok, I'm done babbling. Questions, prosim.

Have you been to Wyoming or Montana? Talk about an endless sky. You feel like you're in a bowl; there's a lifting of weight off your shoulders because you realize how big the world is and maybe the things we are doing to satisfy our every whim through mind-numbing, garbage-producing technology are actually insignificant to the power and majesty that is the Earth. And you lift your arms to the sky and your face to the sun and you taste freedom.
