Texas Governor Debate

People of Texas! Get your ass to the voting booth for this election. If you don't, I won't ever make you a pie again and I'll kick you in the head. Seriously, this is important.

Notes on the debate:

Kinky wants to put the border under martial law to deal with illegal immigration. He's also huge on the biodiesel kick, and he wants to put Willie Nelson in charge ofcoordinating that in Texas because of his connections with co-ops that produce it. He said No Child Left Behind should be changed to Leave One Governor Behind. He doesn't miss a chance to slip in a sly dig at Perry. Kinky just said "I don't use the internet, I think it is the work of Satan." Give the man points for honesty, he doesn't shrink from this. "Ask not if you are proud of Texas, ask if you have made Texas proud of you." - one of the better twists on Kennedy's famous line.

Rick Perry is a slime ball. He just said our public schools are doing fine. He thinks a $2000 pay increase for teachers is some kind of damned achievement. (Thank god for Arkansas is all I have to say.) He just had the gall to say that words matter and that using terminology like "Negro" and "crackhead" was "unacceptable. This coming from a man who called a reporter motherfucker at a press conference. He comes off as an elitest prick and wants to build himself a little dynasty because we don't have term limits. The way he talks about toll roads is idiotic. The trans-Texas corridor is NOT the only feasible way, and it's absurd to suggest our economy will fail if we don't build these damned roads.

Strayhorn is a liar and avoids questions. She uses that fake sugary personality but every word rings false. She keeps talking about having open government and ethics, which is a good thing but I feel like this is a slick finish over her campaign. She has a questionable ethical stance herself because she said she wouldn't take campaign contributations from anyone with a case pending before her office but she just said she couldn't possibly know who all was pending so she shouldn't be tagged for the hundred million she took this year. Strayhorn just looked like a fool because she couldn't say who the newly elected president of Mexico, Calderon. I think she doesn't have a chance after this, if anyone's paying attention. This "Grandma" thing isn't going to carry her and she's no Ann Richards.

Bell has the Al Gore disease. He's terminally dull. He's not really introducing any plan or thing to hang onto here. He sounds practiced and dull. Fire man! Be like Howard Dean! Be unafraid! He keeps saying "when I'm governor" at the end like this is some high school debate. It could be a damned drinking game. Unlike the others, he answered all the questions fairly directly. At least he knows the answers to the questions they asked about term limits and when the battle of the Alamo happened. Bell is well informed about public education, and I like that. It's probably the one thing he has said that sounds genuine. Give him points for sounding painfully ernest in his closing statement about making this a better place. It makes me sad that our Democrats are such grey, waxy figures.

Kinky Friedman said politics stands for "poly" meaning many and "tics" meaning blood sucking parasites. Hah!!! Perry is an asshat who only agreed to one debate, when all the others were willing to go anywhere anytime. Also, scheduling this debate on a Friday night when high school football games are going on, and the night before the Texas Vs OU game means that a huge chunk of the state population will miss this. I hope lots of them have DVR. All our options are a bit horrifying here in different ways. Gods above spare us from governor Good Hair for four more years. I think I'd rather have martial law and Willie Nelson as the Secretary of Energy before that.

I didn't watch the debate, but I agree with you about Strayhorn. Her latest ad (talking about her greatest achivement being her family - *puke* ) offends me.

Is that the same one with the story about marrying her high school sweetheart?

Nice little annecdote; I'm still not voting for her.

It was very interesting, and if you get a chance I would encourage you to watch it.

It's so well and good to be proud of having a good, loving family. But I'm amused that she glosses over two divorces and acts like she's a good conservative spouse.

Actually, the part that offended me was the ... insinuation? assumption?... that her children and grandchildren are her greatest achievement. Totally playing the 'grandma' card.

I'm a little sensitive to those sorts of statements and the commercial caught me at the wrong moment, in the wrong mood. I had a few choice words for the t.v....

*Sympathy* & *Empathy*

We'll have our many (local) bloodsucking parasites all strutting their stuff next May. Aaaarrrggh!

Trouble is we're due the National shindig sometime in the next couple of years too. Double Aaaarrrggh!

Off to watch Ioan Gryffydd as "Hornblower"!

i don't know if i will vote for governor because all of those choices are terrible and we don't have an "against all." i will throw away my vote by writing in "against all."

It is too bad we have a none of the above option.

[identity profile] alainn-sorcha.livejournal.com 2006-10-14 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
So what happens if none of the above wins?

Well they way they do it in Russia is that the whole election has to be redone.
