Lubys

What I should have done is just gotten out of bed at 4am when I woke up the first time. Going back to sleep only sent me into some truly horrific nightmares. Ever have a panic attack in a dream? Wake up actually having that panic attack and gasping for air because some bipedal squid like creature was tring to drown you? It was a little bit Lovecraftian, I'll admit, but it scared the hell out of me. I'm surprised I didn't scream.

It's chilly this morning, but our temperatures will be in the 70s and 80s this week. That's right. Envy us, all you people trapped in snow.

House of Plenty: The Rise, Fall and Revival of Luby's was just published in October by the University of Texas press. I really need to read this. Luby's Cafeteria holds a dear place in my head, as a childhood memory and as perhaps the ultimate comfort food in my life. This food tastes like my north Texas grandma's cooking. This is the only place I eat macaroni and cheese. I have eaten the exact same meal at Luby's since I was five years old. I don't plan on ever changing that meal either. When I'm old, decrepit and senile, hopefully this memory will be seared into my brain and I will never go without its comfort. (For the record, I eat the fried fish (fish rectangle!), a double serving of macaroni and cheese, and a dinner roll with unsweet iced tea. Sometimes I have chocolate ice box pie.) I ate in Luby's this weekend actually, and saw they are reissuing the Luby's cookbook! Awesome. They put one out for their 50th anniversary but it's out of print and hard to come by these days.

I've been there once. That place scares me. If I could pick every WT stereotype, and every old person in texas and cram them into a cafateria style restuarant.. that was my impression of Luby's ;-)

I love to go there at lunch, because it is all elderly people and police officers. :D

I suppose if you didn't grow up with it, it's hard to understand the Lubys Love. But seriously, lots of tasty food for cheap. Hard to go wrong.

I guess it's also a texas thing too. I never grew up on cafateria style food or even buffets for that matter. If we wanted a place to get inexpensive food (that wasn't fast food) we'd go to like a TGIF or Ruby Tuesdays.

When I was kid, Friday and Ruby Tuesday were too fancy for us. Being poor, it was Dairy Queen or Lubys. :P
