It's only creepy if the name is really uncommon and you decide to advertise what you've done and why to them with some sort of wackadoodle agenda, but I assume you've not gone insane since I last talked to you, so it's probably fine.
I think every person should have the right to choose their own name, especially if the one they are born with has failed them. I do think there's a lot to consider when doing so, but you seem an intelligent enough person to make such decisions for yourself.
I've had a hankering for a while to make the switch to something a bit Scandinavian. Bad enough my dad's family stole my current last name from a prominent scientist and street named after said scientist.
