I avoided the news all afternoon long at work, so I could watch the recorded Derby before we went out to dinner. What a beautiful, beautiful race. I really thought Hard Spun was going to win right up til that moment at the last turn. Gods above, that horse came from 19th place to win by 2 1/2 lengths. My jaw dropped open when I saw him burst out of the crowd. Oh how I wish I had been there.

After the excitement of the Derby (for me at least), Tyler, Melynda, Sarah, Mike and I went out for dinner. Hula Hut was packed with a two hour wait since it was Cinco De Mayo. Oops. We went to Tony's Vineyard instead, which is probably the best little Italian place in the entire city. The owner waited on our table, and called Sarah a coward when she didn't order dessert which was probably high on the scale of bizarre and funny moments in my life. Tyler, Mike and I split a bottle of Duo Uve, the white wine I like so much. Our food was fantastically good. I had the fish special, which was orange roughy in a cherry wine cream sauce with red peppers, shrimp and penne. The fish was perfectly cooked. I haven't had fish that good in who knows how long. We were of course tempted by the lovely dessert plate. I had the amaretto cake, which was layers of angel food cake and marscapone soaked in frangelico and topped with hazelnut slices. ZOMG. I am in awes and envy of this cake. It was light, fluffy, well flavored, not too sweet, and the cake was not soggy at all. Tyler and Melynda reported the tiramisu had the same delicate balance. Mike and Sarah ate cheesecakes. We were all stuffed and pleased, even without the amusement of all the prom kids in there.

Later that evening Mike and I watched The Prestige, something I regretted missing in the theaters. The movie was stylish, though I think it lacked an emotional punch or depth. The ending took a long time to play out and there was a lot of exposition there. But overall, an entertaining film. Bale and Jackman were entertaining rivals. David Bowie as Tesla was really sort of worth the entire rest of the movie.

Time to have my leftover fish for lunch. I wish I had more of that cake.

You can't go wrong with Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman in one movie. The prettiness is almost overwhelming.

They are really awesome. I have to agree.

Have you ever been to Andiamo? It's an Italian place on Burnet, in a strip mall I think across from the UT Robotics Lab (or maybe it's an AI lab or Jet Propulsion or somesuch... I always forget). I've not been yet but it's supposed to be really, really good. I hardly ever venture into downtown, so I've not been to Tony's Vineyard.

Have you seen The Illusionist? I know Prestige got all the media attention, but I deeply loved The Illusionist, and I get possessive about my genre movies (I've skipped a bunch of zombie movies since 28 Days Later, and was a bit upset that Grindhouse tricked me into watching a new one, even though I ended up liking it). The reason I mention it is they added a romantic storyline to the screenplay, one that wasn't part of Steven Millhauser's short story. Jessica Biel is actually non-annoying, and it has the sort of atmosphere that grabbed me by the hind brain and demanded that I feel what it wanted me to feel. So if you're looking for a period stage-magician movie with emotional punch, you might like it.

I haven't been to Andiamo, but I think I know where it is. Hmmm. I have to try that. But sometime, the trek to campus area for Tony's is worth it. They are on 29th, across from Texas French Bread and near Toy Joy so you can make it a multipurpose stop. :D

I haven't seen The Illusionist but I am definitely going to put it in the netflec queue. Mmm.

And The Illusionist is shot in Prague and Český Krumlov! Which just adds to its awesomeness ;)

I agree completely with your assessment of The Prestige. I would more strongly recommend The Illusionist- my guess would be that you would enjoy it.
