Last night we saw Eastern Promises, which I can highly recommend. I intend to paper my work cube with all the posters I took home from the theater. Every time I see a Cronenberg movie, it feels so different from the one I saw before and I think that is part of his fascination. He tells strange, individual stories. The character of Nikolai is terrifying and enigmatic, and compelling. Everyone seems unable to let him go away.
If there isn't a fanfiction explosion over the tension between Nikolai and Kiril, I'll eat my hat. not to mention seeing Mortensen naked and covered in blood and Russian prison tattoos. The interviews with Mortensen about the role and the shooting are fascintating. He was reading my favorite piece of old school Russian literature - Demons by Dostoevsky - while working on this character.
