give me your recs

Alright, I know many of my friendslist are more knowledgeable than me. I love Ghost in The Shell, and Vampire Hunter D. I've watched Lain and I grew up with the original Aeon Flux shorts on Liquid Television. What I want are recommendations for your favorite anime, manga, etc. Tell me. Share! I need things to watch.

Of course there are always the Miyazaki films, but you're probably already familiar with those.

Um... Photon is a not-so-well-known series that is funny, although it's fairly short. Try to get the subtitled version, if you check it out. Urusei Yatsura is also good. That's a really old one, but funny. It's by the same person that did Ranma 1/2, if you've seen that. If not, check that one out, too. Subtitled is better on all of those.

I'm out of touch these days. I've been too busy to keep up with anything new.

Hellsing.

I think Witch Hunter Robin was good but I can't remember it very well....

Which doesn't mean much. I don't remember anything well.

Does Full Metal Alchemist count? Everyone I know loves it but I've only seen one or two eps.

Rick suggests Cowboy Bebop and Witch Hunter Robin. I can vouch for the latter... it's like Ghost in the Shell in that it has a mostly-comprehensible plot arc, unlike a lot of anime. Avoid Naruto like the plague. *shudder* Characters that scream all the time, meandering nonsensical plot, etc.

I asked about another one that I only remembered one scene from, and Rick seems to think it was Bleach, but I think what I remember predates when he started recording that one, so I dunno. Trinity Blood wasn't awful... nanotech vampires and crazy-ass churchmen.

ETA: Samurai 7, and Basilisk if you don't mind ninja-type-people, sez Rick. He just keeps coming up with more ideas. And lots of people love Full Metal Alchemist, but everytime I saw part of an ep, the plot seemed to be the same... too much recycling for me.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a giant robots scifi that starts out comprehensible and becomes progressively less so. S-Cry-ed is "slightly scifi, slightly martial arts, guy with superpowers thing" according to Rick. Sheesh, you've found the one and only topic where he starts talking and won't shut up. =P

have you seen Ghost in the Shell, Stand Alone Complex? it is a TV show which is actually pretty good, using the GitS setting. Two series (26 episodes each) and a made for TV movie (Solid State Society). p.s. yes, i do own the whole set...

I also recommend the tv series Planetes. A very realistic and interesting look at a near-future space age. Good characterization, dialog, and excellent plot.

And finally, Millennium Actress. One of the best Amine ever, it transcends the genera into being an actual movie in its own right, and a very good one at that. I don't think it has received enough credit and is worth the rent, if not simply purchasing it.

The husband is into anime. Names I recognize from this page: Full Metal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop (for the corgi if nothing else!) Neon Genesis Evangelion, Millennium Actress. Those are all ones I know he has watched and talked about and we might even have on DVD. I don't watch them all the way through, but I do enjoy the doggie in Cowboy Bebop.

On the silly end of things, Azumanga Daioh is so f-ing cute, your teeth will hurt. I have all of it on DVD.

One set I have that you could borrow is "Bubblegum Crisis". It's older, but really good cyberpunk. Also, if you haven't seen it, every anime watcher has to see "Akira" at least once.

More votes for Full Metal Alchemist and Cowboy Bebop. I've also seen Outlaw Star and that was pretty good. Samurai Shamploo, Ghost in the Shell, and Witch Hunter Robin were all good. I guess Adult Swim chooses pretty good anime.

Have you discovered hentai yet?

Wicked City! A must have, IMHO.

I actually also like Naruto, but am not sure you would love it. Instead, enjoy my Naruto icon!

Given that our tastes appear eerily similar in animation, film, and book stuff, here is a list of some of my favorite animes of all time (I have bolded the ones I think would be great for you to start off with):

FLCL, Samurai Champloo, Paprika, Paranoia Agent, Elfen Lied, Noein, Bleach, Blood+, Noiseman Sound Insect, Eureka 7, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Beck, Death Note, Ergo Proxy, Fullmetal Alchemist, Gilgamesh, Neon Genesis Evangelion, RahXephon, Millenium Actress, Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal, Mushi-shi, Ruroni Kenshin (the "sequel" to Samurai X), Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Witch Hunter Robin, Tsukuyomi Moon Phase, The Twelve Kingdoms, Dead Leaves, Afro Samurai, Otogi Zoshi (and I'm sure there's more but I've probably totally overwhelmed you by now!)...

You can go to AnimeNewsNetwork.com to get a synopsis of any of the above.

Be forewarned: I like dystopias! And unhappy endings! I love anime so much and am probably a full-on otaku. Feel free to talk to me about it any time. :D

Blood: the Last Vampire is an awesome movie, one of my favorites right up there with Ghost in the Shell. the series that spawned afterwards, Blood+, is also good, but tends to get whiny.

Bleach is amazing, if you enjoy fight scenes. there's tons of character development, but it's a slow-paced, action-oriented series. but the main character develops through fighting a seemingly-endless lineup of opponents.

Tenchi Muyo is hit and miss, but the Tenchi Muyo in Love movie is awesome. comedy and good action, lots of fun.

Samurai Champloo is an interesting twist on the anime genre, definately worth seeing.

if you like the Miyazaki films, you'd probably also like Last Exile. i've only ever seen the first 10 or so episodes, but that's only because the local video store only had those, and i've had trouble downloading it, for some reason. kinda whimsical, but lots of fun.

enjoy!

Paprika is a great movie. Paranoia Agent is one of my favorite anime series.
