Alexander Solzhenitsyn died a few days ago and his funeral started in Russia a few hours ago. Reading the coverage, I ran across an Op-Ed piece from the Boston Globe that sharply criticized Solzhenitsyn for accepting an award from Vladimir Putin during his presidency. It also ended with these harsh words: In his Nobel speech in 1974, Solzhenitsyn said that "one word of truth will outweigh the whole world." In the 20th century, Solzhenitsyn spoke this word when it mattered. In the 21st, he did not. Everyone has their own opinion and mine is that Op-Ed writer is full of shit. It is easier to blame our heroes for failing us than to look hard at the mirror. It's cowardly to put the burden on an eighty nine year old man.

One might, I think, then charitably conclude that the score thus far in the category of "Speaking Words When They Matter in the 20th and 21st Centuries" stands at:

Solzhenitsyn, 1; Boston Globe, 0.
