This is and is not normal here
Perry told The Associated Press on Tuesday he needed just one shot from the laser-sighted pistol he sometimes carries while jogging to take down a coyote that menaced his puppy during a February run near Austin.
Perry said he will carry his .380 Ruger — loaded with hollow-point bullets — when jogging on trails because he is afraid of snakes. He'd also seen coyotes in the undeveloped area.
When one came out of the brush toward his daughter's Labrador retriever, Perry charged.
We do have coyotes and they are often bad business. However, most of us do not jog with Rugers full of hollow points and equipped with laser sights. THAT is the ridiculous part. And seriously, you need a laser sight on your handgun cause you're afraid of snakes? SERIOUSLY? Maybe you should just jog in boots instead. I'm fairly certain even I can outrun a snake, and a hand cannon is just not an appropriate weapon for killing snakes.

Date: 2010-05-05 05:20 am (UTC)But this post is about none of this. This post is about mocking the guy for carrying a pistol on a jog and happening to be in appropriate situation to use it. A .380 is not a hand cannon. .380 is on the low-powered side of self-defense loads.
In the Texas I'm proud to be from, if a 5'1" woman shot an attacking 6'6" serial rapist on a jogging path, we'd celebrate her. A 6' (or whatever, I have no idea) man carries for no less legitimate a reason (as the article states, he had no security detail on his jog). Regardless of how much of a douchebag governor the man may be*.
* Yes, I agree with restrictions on douchebags with a history of violent crime, such as the aforementioned 6'6" serial rapist. Unfortunately, Rick Perry's threat to humanity probably exceeds his ability to shoot people/coyotes with his .380, an M-16, or a "hand cannon," whatever that may be (though I hear .454 is good against grizzly bears. .380 apparently just pisses them off more).
