I have found that taking horsepills is easiest done with pudding. One pill per spoonful of pudding, and gulp. It cushions the edges.

Applesauce and soft ice cream also work.

Bananas work too, though I don't recall whether you consider bananas an actual food item. I know a few people who'd say the banana would be worse than the pill.
