pens and feathers and all other instruments

Finished the second Attanasio book today, The Eagle and the Sword. It had less of the polished depth that suffused the first one, but I'm enjoying his rendition of the Arthurian legend. It's rather unique. The Dragon and The Unicorn is something to read.

you feel the constant straining, she reappears divine

I decided to take a break from all the Slavic stuff over the break. I'm reading some history and some random pieces of fiction right now, just stuff I want to read. Stuff that I don't have to write papers about or analyze in terms of political or psychological structure. There is freedom in reading Edith Wharton and just enjoying it.

Also reading The Pope's Elephant by Silvio Bedini. It's well done, charming writing, with ample illustrations of Pope Leo X's white elephant Hanno. A weird side note to the history of Portugal, Rome, and the Vatican.

I have a stack of books I need to read, but part of me already wants to go back to the bookstore...

someone help us understand

This weekend, I need to start reviewing my Czech. Have to get it back into shape before school starts again, so my teacher can't torment me too much. Professor P. is supposed to be teaching the class, though the university's site says it will be Professor C. Hmm. Not good. I know eventually I'm going to have to take classes from C. but now? I don't want to take my Czech from him. Especially if the stripper is going to be in my class again. Not that I mind her so much, she is perfectly sweet and friendly. But C. has an eye for undergraduate girls, and he can be even more ribald than Professor L. L. I can handle, we're friends and I've gotten used to him. Sigh. Enough whining about my classes.
