Yuletide again
It's the most wonderful time of the year - when I get to spend the day eating candy and reading hours and hours of Yuletide stories. Which is pretty much what I did today, aside from a bath and making some scrambled eggs in the afternoon. (I'm also relieved my recipient liked their story and comments indicated it was appropriately creepy!)
First, my gift which was sweet and charming and kind of an antidote against all my sadness.
Operation Rescue - Free!
Nagisa Hazuki's brilliant, totally well-thought-out plan to save his teammate from boredom, allergies, and any other potential threats. Closets are involved.
It's lovely and feels like an episode of the show and involves both furry hats and cake. I'm really glad it is my gift.
A Different Kind of Boy - Chronicles of Riddick
"I am not a fucking girl!" Jack snarled, teeth bared in a grimace.
Riddick leaned back in his seat and crossed his arms over his chest, watching the preacher's stunned expression. "I guess that settles that," he remarked mildly.
There are lines in this story that hit me so hard. A genderqueer take on one of my favorite weird movie-verses. Explicit.
Cracking Chell - Portal
GLaDOS has found a different type of test to run, and Chell is her unwitting subject. There's nothing wrong with a little experimentation... right?
I guess I'm just surprised it took me this long to read a creepy sex story set in Portal that involves tentacles. Also explicit. This is just so weird and was also the first thing I read this morning after my own gift.
Springtime for Krieger - Archer
When an ISIS employee is killed in the line of duty, there's only one man Malory Archer can turn to to save the day. Sort of. God help us.
This is fucking hilarious from the premise to the dialogue to the pacing. ROBO-QUEEN!
A Strange Day in May - Brick
When Brain accidentally stumbles into the middle of a kidnapping scheme, he has no choice but to call in a favor.
Smart and fast and sinister, still all noir.
Vast Obscurity - Great Gatsby 2013
From the prompt: "I want retrofuture AU fic where Gatsby is a humanlike android."
Another beautiful story that I didn't know how much I wanted until I found it.
A Place in the Choir - What Does the Fox Say/Ylvis
Every being has a True Song. That's the key to Binding them.
HOLY SHIT. I want this to be a book. And then a movie. Because this author took a weird pop joke song and then wrote this amazing story that has myth and magic and strangeness and danger all wound up in it. Seriously, this is amazing. Read this.
Zack Don't Surf - World War Z
Pensacola Beach, Florida: An interview with one of the founding members of The Santa Rosa Island Surf Patrol, the first prevention unit to use surfboards as a means to police and prevent zombies emerging from the Gulf of Mexico from reaching the shore.
These are the World War Z stories I love so much - the personal, the detailed, the intimate pictures of individuals at the changing tide of the world.
SCP-294, Retrieval Notes - SCP Foundation
"The policy," the anonymous administrator said, "is to reuse equipment not currently being used before wasting funds on new purchases."
If you aren't familiar with SCP, it is generally a bunch of ominous creepypasta sort of stories built by fandom around a couple of the most terrifying video games I have ever played in my life. (Seriously I screamed and ripped my headset off.) This however - this is the funniest SCP I've ever read.
