the stories at night

It feels like the past ten days or so are just constant nightmares. I wake up from these dreams uneasy, sometimes anxious and with my heart racing. Probably the worst was the one involving crawling on my elbows and hoping I would make it to the relative safety before whatever it was out there took notice of me. So much of the detail fades after I wake. But my sleep is vivid and unsettling lately. I thought maybe it was the book I was reading (as there was a particular story set in Vietnam's jungles involving soldiers and forest spirits) and so I switched to a biography. But it persists.
