Congratulations to Marc, who is now a third level Lovecraftian scholar. His article, "The Devil, The Terror, and the Horror: The Whateley Twins' Further Debts to Folklore and Fiction" will be published in the 2002 edition of Lovecraft Studies Annual. His article deals with the influence of Continental images of Satan and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Terror of Blue John Gap" on Lovecraft's "The Dunwich Horror." And to think, some people don't think a good working knowledge of fifteenth century demonology is worthwhile.

Listening to the radio, something I like to do. The soothing flow of pop music. It's been years since we had a really good radio station in this town that played good music. The college station is pretty decent, but for some reason it doesn't come in well in my apartment. But I like to listen to all the empty pop music, and build my own little castles there. So when I hear these songs, I smile inside because I've given them a meaning beyond what any record company creation could ever do.

It's better than peering at all these pieces of paper to finish doing my taxes. sigh. Someone should just rewrite the entire tax code. It's ridiculous, a mess. I wouldn't mind paying taxes so much if I had a bit more faith in our government. I wouldn't mind paying a bit more if it would get me a better government.

Can't shake the exhaustion. It just stays and I sleep more every night to no avail. Last night I dreamed I was in a big city where they were restoring old buildings bombed in some war. All the gargoyles were missing so they replaced them with pikachu statues. Very strange image.

We learned about the giant Stalin statue that existed in Prague from 1955-1962 today. Massive massive thing. I'm almost sad that it was dynamited. Stalin was an evil man, no question. But it does make me sad to see history of any kind erased like that. Some people want to tear down the statues on campus of Confederate war heros and soldiers, which I think is terrible. Those statues are a part of our history and we should recognize that, own up to it. We can't erase our pasts, can't deny them. They are a part of us, something we should learn from. Besides, I love those worn statues. I sit under Hogg, with his rotund belly and coat flapping open, to study my Czech in the sunshine. I would have liked to walk up to Stalin and watch his lonely statue, try to feel across the decades the things that existed before me.
