Orthodox Monks Told to Stop Recording Music
´Rock´ Tainting Tradition, Synod Says

ATHENS, Greece, Jan. 19, 2001 (Zenit.org).- A group of monks whose rock band produced a platinum album and spawned other Christian pop acts has made few fans among the clergy running Greece’s Orthodox Church, according to an Associated Press report.

The Holy Synod, the church’s governing body, last week told the monks to stop recording, saying their music was tarnishing centuries of monastic tradition, AP said.

"This type of activity is not consistent with the lengthy monastic tradition ... and in certain cases, has troubled and scandalized the faithful members of the church, the church said in a statement, the AP reported.

Father Nektarios and his fellow monks at a remote monastery in central Greece shot to fame last summer with "Tsipaki,’’ or "Little Computer Chip" an attack on technology’s invasion of people’s private lives. Their videos include footage from the Gulf War, actors sprayed in gold
paint, and bearded monks jamming on a wooded hilltop.

Their first record, "I Learned to Live Free,’’ gained cult status. The group’s new disc, "SOS,’’ is scheduled for release early this year.

"We are surprised by the position of the Synod," Father Nektarios told AP, "because on the one hand we have all these letters of congratulation, and suddenly they issue a statement which accuses us.’’

The monks turned to music after complaining about the lyrics of songs popular among young boys at a camp the monastery runs, tucked in the mountains overlooking the Corinthian Gulf about 185 miles northwest of Athens. All proceeds from their music go to the camp. ZE01011920

The feeling of being turned down for a lame job is one of the worst. Damn it. Damn data entry and dot com jobs. I'm so tired and frustrated.

Fine. Back to studying, which is much more pleasant anyways. I'm going to make more blueberry muffins for dinner. I will practice writing eloquently about American foreign policy and why we do what we do. Fun fun fun.

There is no real point to this. But I want to visit StalinWorld. It's no more disturbing than letting people tour Dachau and Aushwitz, or erecting that horrifying Holocaust museum in D.C. It's a shame so many people would rather forget and throw so much of our history away.

The anti-abortion folks with the massive photos of dead children had their lawyers out there today. oh how awful that we might have controversy and differing viewpoints on a (gasp!) university campus! how unthinkable that not all student share a liberal worldview! oh dear, what can we do to stop them from disagreeing with us in such a dramatic manner?!? Reading the letters in the Texan made me want to throw up today. I used to think conservatives were intolerant bastards, but lately it's struck me that the liberal camp isn't any better at all.

On days like this it is good I don't have a gun. I would be way too tempted to take my frustrations out in a non-constructive manner.
