today in the news
Apr. 18th, 2001 04:25 pmAlmost time to go. Only one more night in my own place. It's depressing me. Maybe I just feel like no one apprieciated at all when I worked and put myself through college. I don't know.
The sun is out. For which I am thankful.
We talked about the Velvet Revolution today in Professor P.'s class. She had a cousin studying to be an engineer in Prague at the time. He went to Vaclav Square to join the protests, and to take pictures. He was carrying his nicely bound thesis and his backpack when the police on the edge of the square started swinging at the protestors with truncheons. The thesis probably saved his life as he held it tightly over his head to cushion the blows. Later it had to be rebound because the cover had been cracked and mangled in the beating. I have memories of seeing the CNN coverage of Czechoslovakia in 1989, images flashing across the screen. Even as a kid I watched the news whenever I could, one of my parents' gifts. I would get up and watch Headline News with Don Harrison in the morning. I cried when he died in the mid 90s. I lost one of the iconic figures of my childhood, a man who had told me about Iran Contra hearings, the 88 presidential race, the Velvet Revolution, the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the end of the Soviet Union, the Gulf War, O.J. Simpson, Waco, Oklahoma City, and so much more... Godspeed, Mr. Harrison. You have no idea how much you meant to me.
I have donught coupons. Hurrah! I like Dunkin Donughts, because only they have those super sugary donughts filled with chocolate frosting and covered in powdered sugar. By far the messiest donughts on earth. I love them.
Returned a checkbook I found in Mezes. The girl hadn't even realized she had lost it until I called. Cynthia was very thankful and bought me a cup of coffee. We laughed about Welch and I went to my government class for a very fascinating lecture on money, value & international trade. This is my professor's field, so he is really in his element.
I should stop watching cartoons and reading, do more cleaning and last minute packing. I just have some kitchen things, clothes, and my posters to deal with tonight. Not like my lazy friends who have put all their packing off til tonight. *sigh* Kids these days... and they are older than me! Once again, I see that age has nothing to do with sense.
I wish I could share this impossibly beautiful Texas day with everyone out there who needs a little happiness. The arching blue sky, a slight breeze, 70 degrees and everything is brilliantly green. This is the perfect time of year for Texas.
