sunshine on the cobblestones
Jun. 13th, 2001 03:49 pmThe sun is out today, and for once it is warm enough to leave my jacket behind. Though I do miss the pockets. The notebook Cate gave me fits inside nicely, so I can carry it around everywhere and take notes.
Saw Havel yesterday, leaving the Castle. I waved at him, riding in his motorcade. Bought gifts yesterday, things for my grandparents and a birthday present for Hana. I found Lovecraft stories in Czech, which was neat.
Don't tell me it's not worth trying for... They play the radio in the net cafe, and I always hear these old pop songs. The Croatian girl leans over at the waist and kisses his forehead, and there is something so unspeakably lovely about the moment.
Hana and I are going for coffee either tomorrow or Friday. I want to talk to her some about what I'm feeling, about this city. She is taking me to get a hair cut at a Russian mafia salon too. I'm quite excited. Haircuts are excellent medicine for small depressions.
I need to study some tonight. Mostly vocabulary. Once I learn the words, the grammar kind of falls into place. Some of my classmates annoy me because they speak English constantly. I'm trying to spend more time on my own in the city, practicing my Czech. I've even been mistaken for a Czech girl a couple of times! I can't explain how happy this makes me. An older man with a violin was flirting with me on the street below Orloj yesterday. It was a sweet odd moment.
Bought the most incredible strawberries today on the street by Malostranska. So ripe and delicious and fresh. I almost fell down, they tasted so good. I've never had a strawberry like this. Oh, positively divine fruit. I've found some streets with excellent fruit and vegetable stands. So I live on Kola Loka lemonade and Disko cookies, sandwiches and fruit, and coffee. Garlic soup too. I've had the greatest soup around here, and potato croquettes. There is a pub a few blocks away with this yummy homemade sausage. Mmm. I eat so well here. good thing I have to walk so much.
