the sun is going down slowly
Jul. 2nd, 2001 07:03 pmAfter watching Conspirators of Pleasure in my last film class, I asked Professor Bregant about his name. I've been wondering about it, since it isn't Czech. Turns out it's Belgian originally, centuries back when a Belgian soldier fell in love with a pretty girl in Slovenia. His family lived in Croatia until WWII. His grandfather fled to the Czech Republic and what was supposed to be just a few months turned into the rest of his life. So my professor grew up in Prague speaking Czech and Croatian to his grandparents. Later in life he said they began to forget both their Czech and Croatian. The only language they could communicate in was German. Strange.
We watched some beautiful short films today, Dobre Srdce and Pani Le Murie. Talked about the current Czech filmmakers and their work, including things like Kolya, Cosy Dens and Divided We Fall. Tomorrow I'm going to a store where Bregant said I should be able to find some of the movies I've enjoyed so much. I definitely want to show some of these to people in Texas.
Another epic language class with Jitka today, which included out final exam. I think I made out pretty well. After class Jean and I ate lunch in Cafe Slavia, and incredible ice cream sundaes at this little place off Staromestka namesti. Bregant also recommended an ice cream place near U Zlateho Tigra, so I must go try that too.
Woke up with a sore throat, but I think I've driven it off by sheer force of will. I will not be sick this week, especially since I'm getting on a plane. In other medical news I think I'm going to finally go back to the doctor when I get back to Texas. Some things I've been putting off too long, and my mother's skin cancer along with my own paranoia is finally getting me to do this.
Tomorrow I'm going to mail another bazillion postcards and I sincerely hope they all make it. I think I am the most prolific postcard-writer in Kommenskeho Kolej.
I need to find someone in Austin who wants to pick me up and go straight to Kerbey Lane when I get back to America. Lisa and Jenny are on my flight home, and we have big plans to eat chips and salsa, Kerbey queso and quesadillas. Mmm, food. It's crazy how much I miss certain foods.
Yesterday during Mass I realized how much I miss the community of St Thomas More. I miss seeing familiar faces and Father Elmer drenching us in holy water. It will be nice to go back. I have quite a stack of prayer cards to pass around.
