The illustrations to the main story of Harper's this month possess an eerie, compelling edge. The tower side, the lower edge of fiery smoke, an American flag falling like a body. The small solider figure, gun pointed at a billowing cloud of grey smoke. When the photos and video have lost their immediate, shocking power, these images retain something of the horror in stylized form.

take me down to the paradise city
Oct. 15th, 2001 11:34 amWent out in the glorious cool air, the shining sun, the azure sky with it's white softened pieces of cloud like spray paint dots. It's a good day to breathe, to live. Bought milk and cereal, a pomegranate and black hair dye. Tomorrow I'll dye my hair in the morning and stand on my balcony eating pomegranate in the breeze.

Oct. 15th, 2001 11:04 pmKinda glad I didn't go to school today. There was an anthrax scare at the Law school, and the fire department went out on 35 anthrax calls today. Hysteria I suppose. All powder, all mail being suspect. I don't want to be caught up in this.
Studied anthropology at home, ran errands, went to work. Shelved books and worked on the buy table all by myself for the first time. Not too many buys, and nothing too complicated so it was nice. Fairly quiet day all in all.
It's windy outside, pushing everything around. A nice night to wrap myself in blankets and read, drink some gin & tonics.
