Aug. 23rd, 2002 04:55 pmLast night we had a small closing ceremony, in the new town hall. (which is still rather old) Quite a beautiful building, with an metal dragon in the courtyard and frescos all over the ceiling. The mayor of Brno gave a little speech about how nice it is to learn foreign languages, and he liked my cowboy hat. Along with my certificate I got a bright yellow sun, stuffed with lavendar. Utterly random.
Food at the Menza later was actually rather good. Fantastic light cookies filled with chocolate cream, good beer, and such things. My certificate smells like hazelnut cake, because someone dropped a piece on my stuff. I helped Turve steal the salt shakers, because she liked them so much.
The best part of the evening was the Moravian quintet that played for us. A genial, smiling man with a violin, sang songs for us, some of which we actually knew thanks to our professors. Holka Moodra Olka sounds much better that way. During a fiesty Hungarian song, Eva Rusinova and another professor danced madly, and it was something to see. It reminded me of watching Hana and Otto dance last year.
Went out last night to a series of bars with some other students, and was hassled by several drunks. Ugh.
This morning, most of the students took off for home or Prague or Budapest. I gave Anke my number, and a lot of quarters. She is flying to Austin in a week or so, to spend a month working and practicing her English. I think I will introduce her to Rachel, so they can speak German. She is so nervous, about going so far off on her own.
Today has been quiet. I ate palačinky with strawberries for lunch, did some shopping. Had been agoniying over what to bring back for Gene, but I hit on a stroke of divine inspiration last night. Managed to only spend 672 korun at Botannicus, which was quite restrained for me. It is a good thing the store here is not as large as the one in Prague.
The only wretched part of today was the cleaning women throwing out all my shampoo, my toothbrush, toothpaste and soap. Damn it. I had to run to Tesco and buy new stuff.
But things are arranged with the taxi, the bus, and the planes. So all I have to do is enjoy myself.
