further adventures in D&D
Sep. 24th, 2003 12:32 pmFor once, I didn't get knocked unconscious in a horrifying battle sequence.
Anyhow, after the dragon killing we continue onwards towards the village where Grisbek needs to return. (NPC half troll barbarian shaman person with purple blood, just so you know) As we're approaching the rise at the foot of the mountains, we see fires and hear the report of a rifle shot. It seems the village is under attack, and Grisbek goes tearing down there despite his wounded state. We tether our horses and leave our servants in the trees while we creep up around the rise.
Meier consults his magical book, which informs us that these are nasty things called Dreggs, and you need magic to kill them. Great. With some luck and sneaking, we pop off the sentries outside the village and regroup just in time for the leader to start taking potshots at us. Another one in a tower narrowly missed Meier's head. I think the ranger killed him, but I don't remember.
We make it up to the wall of the village when we're attacked en masse by five of the damn things. They move extremely fast. Alex is firing and reloading as fast as he can, Tjaden is using that scimitar he found on the dragon, and our poor goblin is holding up pretty well with his spear. Meier gets knocked down but manage to grab a healing potion of the ranger's belt and narrowly escapes being killed. Alex and Meier both fire on the leader, who is now standing on the roof of a hut to try and snipe us down.
At one point, while almost surrounded by screaming monsters, I have the choice of using Meier's last offensive magic spell to try and take out a creature or two around us, or to try once again for their commander. The DM looks at me and says "If you roll well, this could change the entire outcome of the game." Meier goes for the leader, and I roll three d4s for the damage as the spell has an automatic success. I have never felt so much pressure and so I threw the dice down on the table hard enough to make them scatter to each end.
I roll 3 fours, a perfect damn roll, and with the bonus it's enough to knock him unconscious. I will never roll so well on anything again. After that I collapsed on the couch.
We began to take down the remaining dreggs, and I ended up putting the very last one to sleep because we were in bad shape. Alex cut the heads of of him and the leader before the surviving trollkin made an appearance. Meier was at one hit point, Alex was at three, and Tjaden and Bob the goblin were unconscious.
It was an amazing game really, and our DM seemed so pleased that we put some thought into our plan as opposed to the usual method of 'charge in and shoot everything that moves.' We racked up a ridiculous amount of experience, enough to level up to 6th. Jason found a prestige class that would actually work for Meier, the adventuring scholar. Must now rework character stats. But it's a plan and it's divine inspiration because I suddenly have an idea where Meier's going. He remains quiet on the subject, but I can hear the boy thinking.
