Dec. 28th, 2003

The last days of December are always an odd time, for one reason or another. Today however, it is good to just stay at home. I have nothing more to worry about than where I wish to sit and read. It's grey and cloudy outside, which makes staying at home all the more pleasant. If only Metro was finished with their renovations, I should like to go there. But I think I will stay here in my Christmas socks and Alan's bathrobe, listening to the rain and the sounds of Alan's video game.

1.) What is this bevo thing rm has mentioned?

Bevo! Bevo is the great mascot of my alma mater, and the largest mascot in the land at 1950 lbs. He's a longhorn, and the current Bevo is the 13th. He's beautiful and enormous. They begin training prospective Bevos early, to get used to loud noises and bangs, because they fire a cannon every time UT scores a touchdown during football. Bevo goes everywhere in a fancy trailer, and you can get your picture taken with him in front of the Main Building. I have a little plush Bevo.

Read the history of the great Bevo here. Admire his picture right here. Next year the current Bevo will retire, and the Texas Exes have declared 2004 to be "Year of the Bevo."

2.) Do you find there are certain elements of life universal no matter where you travel that surprise you?

No matter where I have been, I've found people who are generous with their time. From shop girls in Paris to a friendly taxi driver in New York to the older gentleman who helped me carry my suitcases at the end of my horrific journey to Brno, I have had great fortune with so many strangers. Certain kindness cross all borders, and that makes me glad.

3.) Where have you gone that you long to, or have longed to, return to, either temporal or physical?

I would love to see Sovinec again, as it was one of the most beautiful places on this earth. It's ruin, an old fortress in Moravia. The Loire valley and Chenonceau as well, with all it's tall trees. It was the first place on earth that reminded me of Lothlorien.

4.) What one thing should everyone do in their lifetime?

Travel, travel, travel. Travel to places far and near, live in utterly different surroundings, meet people from other parts of the world, examine the languages, cultures, arts and foods of the world. It's the only way to really understand how different and how similar we are. Travel is the best thing to spend money on, and the best thing you can do for yourself.

5.) Do you have a favorite language, and if so, which and why?

I think I would have to say Czech, just because I've had the most experience using it. Czech is full of odd consonants and it's difficult, but oh so beautiful. I love to hear it.
