Apr. 21st, 2004 08:34 pmSo very tired, and the sun is barely down. This is weird. Work was pretty decent, and we are having a food day on Friday just for the hell of it. I need to think of something to bring.
Just finished reading The Wish List by Eoin Colfer, of Artemis Fowl fame. Polished it off in an afternoon, the entire odd story. Some parts were perhaps a little too contrived, but on the whole it was entertaining.
Over the past couple days I've suffered from crying jags on and off. Mostly they're triggered by things like financial planning, the prospect of having to buy an outfit for my cousin's wedding, articles about the Hema and Lendu soldiers in the Congo, footage of Waco, and eight million other things. I think I'm just tired. Hell if I know.
The news frightens me so much these days.
I watched a special on Tech TV the other night about India and the call centers opened by so many corporations. Perhaps the oddest part of the entire thing was the cultural assimilation of the workers in these call centers. Western names, Western culture sessions, the encouragement to only speak English almost 24/7... Regardless of the monetary benefit of these jobs, there's something very disturbing about it.
At work today, they announced they would create special queues for HCL to work. HCL is the contract office in India that handles overflow contracts for my company. When there are not any large portfolio projects, they're given access to the work we do. This is supposed to keep them busy, and justify their existence in the downtime. It frightens and upsets many people in the office, not just the dotcom refugees.
