radio silence
Jan. 15th, 2005 08:37 pmOh I hadn't realized how much of a part of my every day life LJ truly is until it vanished for 24 hours. Poor guys, to lose all the power and have to put so many servers back up and running. That's got to suck.
So now I must cover a lot of ground. Friday afternoon I went to have some drinks with my now former coworkers, some of the ones I liked from my group. We bitched about work and cheered my freedom with tasty alcoholic beverages and occupied a large table for too long, much to the annoyance of the people at Z Tejas I think. But they have some tasty food. The mojitos were alright, but the not the best I've had. I left our waiter a really good tip for keeping things together.
I also went and splurged on a bunch of soaps. Resolution aside, I figured I owed myself a new job treat. (Today it turned out to be a really good idea but I'll get to that.) So now I have coconut lime verbena bubble bath and lotion, cucumber melon bubble bath and lotion, eucalyptus and spearmint foaming bath, and black raspberry vanilla soap. Mmm soaps. They were onsale, so I rejoiced.
Today was laziness for much of the day. I read fairy tales as told by modern authors, amd took a long shower. Alan played a lot of Ninja Gaiden which looks great but it really, really hard. I fear the ninja.
The woman who hired me at my new job called this afternoon. She's going crazy trying to coordinate the hiring of so many people I think. I was offered two choices. I can either sign up as a temporary worker and have a job until May 31st, at which point I might or might not be kept on staff, or I can take one of the overnight shifts over the weekend. I agonized over this for half an hour. I truly do not want to work over night, but I'm more terrified of the lack of health insurance and instability of unemployment. So it looks like I'll be working Wednesday to Saturday 8pm to 6am. I'll have to keep this shift for twelve months before I can switch. Not really very happy about that, and really not happy that the only options she offered me were over night shifts but I can't do anything about that. The first several weeks will be 8 to 5 days for training, so I have a few weekends left before I have to give them up for a good long while. That makes me sad.
This depressed me and I spent part of my afternoon moping a bit. Alan and I went out to the book store to pick up a book of fairy tales and the new Cornwall book. I also found a half dozen bizarre and wonderful postcards. We ate a dinner that consisted mostly of nova lox, and visited the evil store Best Buy tp buy the extended edition of Return of the King, the original Battlestar Galactica and William Shatner's new album. For some unholy reason, alan really wanted that cd. Strangely enough, it's kinda cool. The song he does with Henry Rollins makes me laugh out loud, and it was all produced by Ben Folds. Go figure.
We tried to see The Aviator but a) it was damn near impossible to park at the frigging theater and b) the movie ended up being sold out. Damn it. That will teach me to think I can see a movie on short notice on Saturday night. So we hiked three miles back to the car, bought a slurpee at the gas station and came home.
Life is okay I think. I want to take a really long bath, watch a movie and just not think about the future for a bit.
