the velveteen rabbit under a cloudy sky
May. 14th, 2006 01:48 pmOutside the clouds are rumbling, and it is rather dim. I don't think it has become much warmer than 82 though, which is pleasant. I can air out the house until the rain starts. Driving today with the sun roof open netted me a few stray drops, but no real rain yet.
I went to visit my mother, and take her a bottle of BPAL's Harvest Moon. It's grown harder to find on the second hand market, so I try to jump on any bottle that they see. It's her most favorite scent of everything I've given her. I also took my sister some of the imps I've hoarded for awhile. My sister got my mother a new coffee maker, with a working timer. This is heavenly for her.
She's just about finished the baby blanket and stuffed bear she's crocheted for my cousin's soon to be baby. She picked up a pattern book that has all the Care Bears in it. So Ashley and her baby are getting a purple Care Bear, I think it is Share Bear. It looks very nice, and I know Ashley had tons of Care Bears when she was little so it will be that much more fabulous. My sister and I are going to put our names on the card as well. On my way home, I stopped by Half Price to pick up some books for them. Plus, I snagged a whole roll of wrapping paper for a quarter! I think books are always the best gift, you know, but these will be more lasting than any baby clothes I buy. I snagged a big illustrated edition of The Wizard of Oz, and another oversize picture edition of The Velveteen Rabbit. I also picked up some o those faux-leather and gold editions of Treasure Island and Tales from king Arthur. Those have pretty painting plates and woodcuts through the text. I really hope these are a lasting gift for all of the family. They can read stories to their child, show pictures, and move on to the more advanced world of Stevenson as their child grows up. I'm such a big proponent of reading and books. My childhood was so much the better for my parents teaching me to read young, and putting so many worlds into my hands.
Now that I'm home, I find myself reluctant to let this copy of The Velveteen Rabbit out of my hands. This is one of my most favorite children's stories ever. I sat down to read it, and felt my eyes well up. I know, I've heard that it is a thinly disguised religious parable and a million other interpretations. I don't care about any of that. It simply gets to me because of my own deep and abiding love for these inanimate objects and things that populated my childhood. I was a very solitary little girl, despite having a sister. Stuffed animals, my precious delicate Bryer Horses, action figures and books filled a world for me for so many years. I remember having long conversations in my head with the china figures of cats and horses on the bookshelf in the living room, and imagining their lives so completely. I love this poor battered rabbit, and it just makes my heart ache.
Because I can't get out of a book store unscathed, I picked up something for myself. But it was only $2.50! The Memory of All That: Love & Politics in New York, Hollywood and Paris by Betsy Blair. I love old Hollywood. She was married to Gene Kelly for many years, and started as a chorus girl. Random biographies are such a weakness for me. I can't get enough of them.
For now, it is time for lunch. Quiche, and tea, and much laying on the sofa reading for the next few hours.

May. 14th, 2006 08:02 pmI just saw the preview for HBO's Baghdad ER. Dear gods above.
I have an unfortunate habit of watching television and movies that make me cry, that scare me, that disturb my sleep. I can't seem to get away from that for whatever reason. So I think I'll watch the Sopranos now for sheer entertainment that won't make me feel sappy or weird.
