So Sarah and I decided to go out last night for drinks, and ended up at Fado. The parking was crowded, and we were puzzled as to why everything was full at 7pm. It wasn't until we realized that not only was it Republic of Texas biker weekend, it was Pride weekend and tonight was the Pride Parade. Fado turned out to be the best spot, because the MC and singing entertainment were right across the street in front of Rain & Oilcan Harry's. They had an Australian dance diva singing out of the bed of a flatbed trailer, and it was awesome.
It was packed out there on the street, and up onto the patio at Fado's. For a community that is so often divided up into little niches, it was nice to see anyone and everyone out there. I saw a girl that was so perfectly summer and gorgeous. She had an eye of Horus tattoo on the back of her right shoulder, peeking out from her tank top. I should have asked for her number, but I am dumb and didn't think to do it in time. I'm half tempted to post a missed connections on Craigslist.
One of my favorite parts of summer here is girls in tank tops. I don't know why I love that so much, but I do.
Austin is this pulsing little blue cancer in the midst of conservative land. I like it that way. We're here, and we're spreading. Not everyone in the South is a poorly educated vicious bastard. I hate to hear people denigrate my state because of the actions of some high profile jackasses.
One of the parades that made me laugh last night was from a group of Texas real estate & mortgage professionals. Their float said "We don't want you in the closet, we want you in the whole house." There were some large companies like HEB, Dell, Wells Fargo & State Farm out there, as well as several local politicians, social clubs & support services. There were a lot of families, which made me happier than you can believe after my day at work.
I ate a corned beef sandwich to take the edge off all the summery girly drinks I consumed last night. Mmm sangria. I had forgotten how much I love you. We made fun of drunk people on the patio, and our cute petite waitress defended the next table from a giant cockroach. Sarah and I were vastly amused by the drunk dancing in a large crowd of guys next to our table. It was a beautiful night to be out, breezy and much cooler than the day.
Late in the evening, I ran into Jenny. I haven't seen her close to five years. One of the first things out of her mouth was if I was still seing Gene. Hah! We had a very funny ocnversation. She's working at a local hospital now, and seems to be doing well. We caught up on some old gossip and hopefully we will get together again soon.
Sarah and I left before the drunks started hitting the roads, and made fun of the skeevy super liquor store that is not super. I drove home down 360, out in the dark singing along to the radio. It was such happiness. I'd really like a breakfast taco now, but I don't want to fight the crowds at Kerby.
