two movies you should see
Aug. 10th, 2008 09:28 pmTonight we are watching Lars and the Real Girl, which is extraordinary. What makes this film so heartbreakingly lovely is the people around Lars who are trying so hard to figure out how to bring him into their lives. Especially his brother Gus, who takes the situation with Bianca and Lars the hardest. It also provides an excellent portrayal of someone with a mental problem that is not violent, scary or comedic.
And the Watergate salad - perfect.
Wristcutters: A Love Story is the raw, stark core of what Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind should have been. Only it has a better ending and doesn't feel as slick. It's beautiful and about finding what you should have been looking at but were too blind to see in the first place. It is a film rife with references and subtle humor.
Everything about these movies is human, all the awkwardness and joy and pain and sadness in a way that says this is exactly how the world is.
