Who is that awful woman NBC has doing commentary on the platform diving? She's incredibly snarky and horrid about everyone and everything. She even implied during the semifinals that one of the Australian divers has mental problems. Whiskey tango foxtrot? Every time she bitches about someone's toe position I want to scream at the television "I bet you can't even dive off the board lady!" Ugh. She has to find something to complain about for every single dive. Critique is fine, telling the audience what's what is great but this woman is just a cranky old biddy.
I've read the local news the past couple days over the controversial San Marcos traffic stop. Summary: Officer pulls a man over for speeding on IH-35. (Which is sort of hilarious because isn't everyone speeding on that stupid highway? Seriously.) The driver tells the officer that they are racing to an emergency vet clinic because his dog is dying. The officer says, and I quote: "Dude it's a dog. You can get another one. Relax." The officer kept them sitting on the side of the road for 20 minutes, during which time the dog died. The driver offered to stay behind with the officer if his girlfriend could continue driving to the emergency vet with the pet, and the couple also pleaded to be allowed to turn themselves in afterwards. These offers were rejected. I watched the police car dash video online and the guy looks hysterical. It's awful. The incident has drawn a lot of media attention. The mayor in San Marcos had to hold a press conference today about it.
Speeding is bad, yes we all know. It can be dangerous and 35 is hardly a safe place to begin with anyhow. However, what would have happened if the story was the driver was speeding to a hospital with a dying person? A dying baby? For people, I suppose you could call an ambulance. You can't get an ambulance for your pet though. Is it ethically alright to be reckless and possibly dangerous to others while attempting to save a life? Clearly, the officer didn't give a damn about any of it. While I can understand his desire to protect other motorists and enforce the law, he could have handled that situation a hell of a lot better.
I could have used a traffic cop the other day when some asshat in a Honda nearly broadsided me on Mopac. Or enforcing speed limits in school zones and stopping those dumpy little nutjobs driving minivans in the wrong lane. We all know 35 is just a big death trap - just write it off entirely.
