threeplusfire: (red apple book)
Yesterday I sick, miserably staying in bed sick all day with a sore throat and that shaky feeling like a fever coming on to my brain. I did little to nothing. Today I had to make up for that by getting to the grocery store, acclimating the Roomba to the new house and a few other things. Traffic jammed up at the light near HEB, around a large truck that may have been towed away ad police cars. It was transporting a thirty foot curved metal blade. Some giant industrial blending piece or the center of an enormous turbine. With the traffic snarled, I originally turned across the street with the intent of looping around but I could see the other side was equally jammed. Since the heat wasn't 'wish for death hot' I parked at Half Price at stood flipping through the remainders and clearance books in the breeze.

I found a hardback copy of The Secret History, which will be nice to read again sometime. Because it was a dollar, I bought The Girls Guide to Hunting and Fishing because I never did read it when it was popular. Many years ago I had a girlfriend who would refuse to listen to any music that was one the radio or popular and I hated her disdain when Green day got a record deal and time on MTV. Now here I am realizing I have the same unfortunate habit about books. A dollar to prove or disprove my literary snobbery is worthwhile. The best discovery was Moura - The Dangerous Life of the Baroness Budberg by Nina Berberova. Biographies of Soviet emigres and that flashing, dangerous, pivotal section of the 20th century fascinate me. I also happen to like Nina Berberova. I also picked up The New York Times Dessert Cookbook just because one can never have enough cookbooks. Plus I have plans for vampire cupcakes.
