Oh Moscow. It looks so grim and terrible. I found a list of people and hospitals through one of the articles on Lifenews.ru a little while ago, if there's someone you are looking for from afar. I can't even begin to fathom how awful being trapped in the subway with a bomb going off might feel. I love subways.

(Is this the kind of thing that absurdist faction wants here? The first person who tries to tell me the people calling for civil war over the damned health care bill and black President are just so misunderstood will get banned. None I've seen are willing to engage in any reasonable debate to achieve understanding and compromise and I don't want that kind of crazy here.)

I went to the store really early, and then I baked some scones. I bought some books about the 1950s, about the houses and the dinners and gender and sexuality.

I would really, really like to delete my Facebook account because I hate Facebook so much. (Not just the problems with the privacy issues but also the crappy user interface they seem determined to make even more ugly.) I keep my account because of exactly one person, who is not so present elsewhere.

Nine teens have been charged in the "unrelenting" bullying of a teenage girl from Ireland who killed herself after being raped and enduring months of torment by classmates in person and online, a prosecutor said Monday.

Pie!
Pie!
Cherry pecan pie in the making, just before the top crust goes on top.

Today I've baked and baked a lot. First there were blueberry scones, and then it was multiberry scones full of cherry, strawberry, blueberry and cranberry. Why have just one berry, eh? Then I remembered that I promised Mike a pie. I really had a craving for a cherry pie, one that wasn't drowning in syrup. I added some of the pecans Mike's grandmother gave to us in South Carolina, to add some crunch. It looks so good.

Then I had to make the meatloaf I also promised Mike. It is stuffed full of garbanzo beans, because they are delicious. I like to think it balances out all the pork added to the loaf. Plus garbanzo beans are kind of nutty.

While we were in South Carolina, my mother in law gave me several cookbooks because she doesn't cook. Many of them are the spiral bound church and school sale variety. I am especially partial to these. Hidden within the desultory recipes of casseroles and cheeseballs are sometimes fantastic regional gems, family cakes and scalloped potatoes. Of course, you also see casserole made with canned salmon, olives and pimento. But I think I've discovered a new favorite bizzaro recipe and I determined to make it sometime soon. It calls for wrapping bacon around tater tots and frying them. So wrong, and yet so potentially delicious.

One slice of cherry pecan pie

GUYS. This pie is the best. Tart cherries, sweet soft pecans, crumbly golden crust. It's just amazing. I don't often feel the need to gush about my cooking, but hot damn. I made a fantastic pie.
