On Friday nights, we tend to go to dinner at La Brissa. It's a little place down the street, a Mexican restaurant that opened not long after we bought our house. The sign has a neon palm tree. I don't like palm trees because they are weird, full of cockroaches and sort of ugly but I can forgive a neon palm. They have a selection of salsas that lean towards blistering, which pleases me. We alternate between working through all the menu, sampling enchiladas with every combination of salsas, and eating our favorite things religiously. (I love the puerco guisado, and the al pastor enchiladas with the cartuja salsa. The pork is always good there.) Our favorite waiter is named Manny. He's quick and funny, and our latest running joke is that he is a robot. On Fridays there's often live music, something ubiquitous in this town and something Mike has yet to tire of finding. Johnny plays mostly cover songs, from the Cure to the Rolling Stones to Simon & Garfunkel to Oasis. He plays a couple of his own songs, including a really hilarious one about Hapkido sometimes. Last week when we arrived, Manny and Johnny sang us a little riff about robots. It was funny and timely, because it turns out Johnny's day job is with a company that works on profoundly interesting machine learning projects. He appears briefly in the NOVA special about Watson, the computer that is playing Jeopardy. The special is pretty fascinating, churning through the incredibly complex process of building a machine that learns from its own mistakes.

Our weekly trip to our neighborhood restaurant is part of our sci-fi future, even if we don't know it.

Writing a meme is always sort of self indulgent. I have enjoyed writing these entries, even if they were hard or awkward or weird during the process. I found it useful to devote the concentrated thought to things. Hopefully it was not completely boring reading for others.

Day Two: Nine things about yourself.
Day Three: Eight ways to win my heart.
Day Four: Seven things that cross your mind a lot.
Day Five: Six things you wish you’d never done.
Day Six: Five people who mean a lot (in no order whatsoever).
Day Seven: Four turn-offs.
Day Eight: Three turn-ons.
Day Nine: Two images that describe your life right now, and why.
