Following the news lately feels so strange. Does anyone remember the summer of shark attack fear? It was summertime 2001 and the news cycle was so slow that the major networks were consumed with stories about sharks after one or two notably gruesome incidents. I find myself longing for that summer, when nothing much seemed to happen. The news over the past couple months has rocked from major story to major story, with no time for reflection or pause or thought. Libya is engaged a gruesome war against its own people, the legislative attacks on people around America are astounding and depressing, and the disasters in Japan are mind boggling in scope.

I tend to read a lot of fiction in a semi-escapist habit. But even that seems weird as I recently chose to read a bunch of William Gibson and that all seems to close to real right now.
