What I meant to write was a nice cheery post about my excellent week of lunches with friends, which felt like an extended birthday celebration. (Sushi! Every day! Different places! Different faces!) On my way home I stopped at my eye doctor, who miraculously got my back ordered contacts to appear. I was super excited, because now I have contacts to wear for my trip! I walked back out to my car...

... and it wouldn't start. Not a sound or a blink. I had a moment where I thought I must have left it in gear or somehow fucked up the security system. Then I was filled with such a rising tide of panic and horror. It's 100 degrees and I can't even roll down my window because it is electric and I leave for a cross country road trip in a few days and my car won't start.

I called Mike first, in a complete panic and begged him to come to where I was. Then I called our auto place, who just checked the car out a few days ago and pronounced it fine. (Dave's Ultimate Automotive) They know us pretty well, and they have always been stellar people. Well they ran a guy over since I was just a couple miles away, and he jumped my car so I could drive to the auto place. (Thank heavens for that because getting a tow truck at 4pm on a Friday? Impossible.) The guys at Dave's checked everything out, pronounced the cheap Walmart battery dead and got it fixed. They checked up on the alternator, determined the dash was spouting codes due to the low battery charge, chatted with us and got us home this evening. I can't express my gratefulness enough for them. They were obviously busy with lots of stuff, but they got this fixed for me.

Most special about this was that I did not immediately burst into tears. (I might have lost it if the problem had been more serious.) But damn. After years of terrible car problems, and the incredible anxiety and dread associated with them, car problems are one of those things that send me into a catastrophic meltdown. But this time, I made it through. Progress I suppose.
