a day

Last night I stepped outside and the air smelled quite sulfurous. It was strange. It was especially disconcerting after the non-stop staccato gunfire of Battle Los Angeles. (If you are looking for essentially an extended video game cinematic, this is it. I found it entertaining because I didn't need it to be anything else.) The smell was everywhere.

I couldn't remember what I meant to do today. So I wandered around the book store for an hour before I decided to it felt like the perfect time to read some Noel Coward. So I bought a couple plays and a biography of him as well. One of the greatest things I have ever seen was Alan Rickman and Lindsey Duncan clashing ferociously and brilliantly in Private Lives.

I finally went to the store after spending days and days trying to remember what it was I needed to buy besides food. (Icy Hot cream! Of course.) I bought some watermelon, because I have not eaten enough of it this summer and I could rationalize watermelon as a better snack than candy. I am trying to eat better and by that I mean I am resisting the urge to eat so much candy. I really like sugar, but I probably don't need it all the time with everything. I did have a really delicious cupcake and frosted cookie this weekend though. Yum.

(This weekend I also went to a bar to listen to 80s cover bands, which was fun. Except that I do not think bars should be so brightly lit, and without the comforting haze of cigarette smoke. Drinking makes me want to smoke and I can't shake that.)

So today I lazed around reading Noel Coward and eating watermelon. It was grand.

Mike emailed me to send word our loan was approved. We are refinancing the house, because the interest rates are so low! That's nice. I try not to think too hard about the ridiculous house of cards that is the financial world because otherwise it gives me the hives. So many things I still feel unprepared for, despite all this living.

If it ever rains again, things will be mad. The dirt from our dead yards will all run into the street, and the amount of oil baked into the roads will probably turn it all into a gleaming, dangerous ribbon. There's a tiny chance of rain next weekend but I don't believe it. The air feels slightly less horrible today. They are still fighting the fire. Most of the missing people have been found. So few deaths seems remarkable, given the size of the disaster.

Obsidian Pear, originally uploaded by tsarina_amanda.

I've made a Flickr set for screenshots of my Minecraft world. I've built a couple neat things, like my condo between the cliffs of water and lava falls. Also, lots of pear statues like this one. It's made of obsidian and surrounded by flames!
