all books all the time
May. 8th, 2013 05:40 pmWhat I just finished reading: Book #102 for the year, The Red Chamber by Pauline A Chen. It's a sort of condensed, re-imagined version of Dream of the Red Chamber for everyone daunted by the prospect of a couple thousand pages and four hundred characters. It's actually quite good, with very vivid turmoil. I've read a few novels this year that centered on the lives of Chinese women and how their fates were not really left in their own hands. (The Black Isle by Sandi Tan, Snow Flower and Secret Fan by Lisa See, Big Breasts and Wide Hips by Mo Yan)
What I am reading now: Handling the Undead by John Ajvide Lindqvist appears to be a creepy zombie novel. This is the same author who did Let The Right One In which I found bleak and interesting so I'm hoping I'll enjoy it. So far it is stuttering along. I have another novel, also horror, from this author. Seems he's billed as the great Scandinavian version of Stephen King.
What I will read next: Probably some more Black Butler manga. I'm trying to ration them out because honestly I could devour the entire series in a day. I might also read JG Ballard's Kingdom Come or possibly a book on the history of Fritos. (It's full of recipes, y'all)
I'm trying not to be stressed about being under employed at the moment. It could be much, more worse.
Frozen yogurt season is upon me. It's all I want to eat. Well also cupcakes. But frozen yogurt is probably slightly better for me. My extravagance is to pile a handful of nuts and a full tablespoon of sprinkles on top. Also mochi balls if they have them, cause they are like marshmallows.
The street parking situation is jacked because the President will be here tomorrow. I was hoping to go down early and get a good spot, but I don't think that will happen now.
The local paper is moving towards subscription only access for their site, so I've stopped reading the news in large part. I feel guilty about that, but there's only so much room in my head.
