DAY THREE: your favorite movie

This is a really impossible question. I like a lot of movies. We go to the theater often, for new stuff and special presentations of older stuff. If we're at home, it is fine to talk during the movie. But a theater is like a temple, and in the temple you keep your damned mouth shut and don't talk. I love seeing stuff in the theater when I want to be overwhelmed by the light and sound.

What's going to be the favorite? The one I've watched the most times? The one I could leave on repeat all day in the dvd player? The one that makes me cry? The most beautiful one?

I think for simplicity's sake we will have to go with my favorite movie this year, which will probably enter the top tier of favorite movies for a long time. I saw Only Lovers Left Alive in a theater in Atlanta with my friend Sarah a couple months ago. It has a magnificent darkness, defined by these borders of light. The soundtrack is rich and haunting. There are beautiful people, and despair and anger and love and yearning that stretches time. I found myself holding my breath at times. It felt like that cold application of aloe vera on a sunburn. I wanted to stay in that moment forever.
