the new day

Coming home, snow falling outside, the fine crust on my car.

A spur of the moment decision put me in a car last night after work, headed for Houston. Melynda and I listened to the Counting Crows, Tori Amos, Guns N Roses and Radiohead, singing along and talking. It only took two and half hours because we had friends following us, otherwise Melynda would have driven like a demon. Her friend Richard held a party, and I finally met many of Melynda's high school friends. Doug looked like a mobster, black suit and white tie, and Wes wore his amazing shirt with a hood. Funny, funny people. I like them. Usually I avoid parties where I don't know most of the people, because I feel awkward around strangers. Yet last night and this morning I felt at ease and talked to many people about all sorts of things. Nuclear war, Pakistan, dancing, Russia, languages, the merits of Guinness. Doug lost his mind upon meeting two girls who drank Guinness and proposed marriage on the spot. One of the rare times when I've been around people drinking who don't turn into idiots or beasts. Someone even gave me their phone number. That's never happened before.

Have you ever heard people argue about whether Aragorn or Legolas is more of a bad-ass? While drinking Shiner in someone's living room amongst the country-style blue sofas so favored by certain suburban mothers? It's hilarious. I think the argument was eventually decided in favor of Legolas.

A day for beginnings, stories, snow, chocolate. Melynda's parents sent me home with a box of Godiva truffles, and we ate many in the car on the way back. Friday, Micah and I will go get our tattoos. We very nearly went today, but wound up being rather lazy instead.

Talked with my parents after getting home. It is good, good to be alive.

Aragorn is so much more of a bad-ass than Legolas.
Which isn't to say that in a fight, Legolas wouldn't win.
It's just to say, elves are supposed to be like that.

BTW, I just discovered another fabulous vice brought to us by the Internet -- elf-torture stories.

Bad reive.

Oh are you reading the same story I'm reading? With the orcs? Eeee.

You should have been there for that moment, it was grand.

The newest chapters of Unfinished Games are lovely. I like the first person stuff, and the talking many languages. Oh, delight.

The one about Sauruman trying to corrupt Legolas into an orc or the much better one where he's tortured by the Uruk-Hai and then there's that whole Aragorn business? Lol. Conversations I can't believe I'm having.

I'm so glad you're enjoying UG -- I worry it won't work for people because they can't deal with characters _evolving_ and all that shit. I have to plow through a lot of 3rd person logistical stuff right now (feh), so I can do more of the stuff in Sev's voice -- which is probably the most fun to write, but is stupid exhausting.

Perusing the net further, I really hope you're not reading the awful Return to Bree thing about the orcs -- it's really bad.

It occurs to me, as well, that saying "are you reading the one about the orcs?" is not a useful way to differentiate LotR fic.

Hehe, sorry. Not that terrible thing. Shadows Amongst the Leaves.

I'm exhausted and silly right now. Yes. Which is why I said something that silly in the first place.

A book, a video, and something in a box

*little wave* Happy new year 2002, Amanda. It was snowing earlier, wasn't it? Though a white Christmas may not be too common round here, I can't very well imagine outright Summer in December like in the Southern Hemisphere... Anyhow, my brother was asleep from the previous night's revels so I volunteered to feed our goats and sheep. I haven't been out with them for a while and they were all winter fat and the snow in my hair looked like grains of salt.

Finally, in case you still need suggestions, may I humbly recommend:

  • Un Chien Andalou, which movie I got for Christmas and laughed at uproariously.

  • Ancient Lights by Davis Grubb, my favorite book ever and ever.

  • Music by Philip Glass, Pantychrist, and Austin's own Coz the Shroom, as well as "A Medieval Christmas" with the Boston Camerata.

  • Don't know many livejournals, but I like netbaby (http://www.netbabyworld.com), the Swedish Museum of Natural History (http://www.nrm.se) site, and um, er, *cough* my own homepage (http://www.onigami.net/lafcursiax) (no updates since last century!).

  • I've been wanting to see Meet the Feebles for quite some time-- you say it may be coming at the Dobie? Neat-o.

Best of luck on that tattoo!

I know! They just handed boxes of candy around, and laughed while Tara, Micah and I sat on the floor eating pieces. I'm surprised we didn't die from chocolate overload.
