life in television

Sitting here with my glass of Smirnoff and lemonade, I'm all done with my homework for tonight. Tomorrow is culture day in Czech so perhaps Professor P. will teach us a song.

All I want to do is bake potatos and bread. Though I should be working on that pesky resume so I can find another job and go back to working like a good little American. Bah.

Rumors abound that the government might televize the federal execution of McVeigh. I wanted to cry when I heard that. How hideous. Like that will deter anyone. All it will do is make McVeigh a matyr and continue desensitizing people to violence and death. Nothing is real in the country of the television.

Maybe I will just go sit in the bath tub, read the Chronicle and eat oranges. Nabokov used to write in the tub, eating little oranges all day when he and Vera were poor in Germany.

god. i can't believe they're seriously considering televising the mcveigh execution. that's terrible. and really, when you're nutty enough to kill someone, are you really thinking "i could be killed for this"? how good of a deterrent is capital punishment anyway?

I don't have stats to hand you, but if I remember correctly it doesn't hold up as a deterrent. Especially if you're out of your mind on chemicals or mentally ill, as were some of our executed prisoners.

It's utterly abhorrent to me that we'd put an execution on. Is it going to run after Temptation Island? Before Survior and Dateline? Jeez.
