Why on earth do people name their servers and programs and robots Amanda?

In latin, amanda means "a woman (or other singular feminine entity) who will be (or MUST be) loved", or "things (neuter plural) that will/must be loved".

I suppose its a good thing to name your babies, wheher they are made of flesh or of bits, so that when they inevitably leave your care they will surely...by virtue of their names alone...be loved.
