Professor P. finished editing the galley proofs of her book yesterday. It's about Nabokov and Kundera, and when it comes out I will make everyone read it. Should be good. Sometimes it makes me sad to know such fantastic scholars and yet realize most of the world couldn't give a damn about their work. Art and literature survive on such a narrow ledge.

Why do I want to eat chocolate ice cream, even though I'm so cold? Bah. I like Groundhog Day cause you see lots of men in old coats and top hats. Ahh for the days when people dressed up to leave the house. I wish I had lived then sometimes.

The most beautiful photograph I've ever seen was taken by a man on the streets of Amarillo, Texas half a century ago. He shot a gorgeous black and white picture of my grandparents walking back from a lunch date and sold it to them. My grandmother in a lovely narrow belted dress with perfectly coiffed hair and ankle strapped shoes. My grandfather in a well cut suit, a fedora on his head. When I saw that photo for the first time, shortly after my grandfather's death, I realized that they had been young once. I had never thought of it before. They were young and so beautiful. what an amazing thing to know.
