deep sea

I am watching Iron Chef. It's Anglerfish Battle, and an uglier fish I have not seen in my life. An extra long battle, because slicing up the fish seems to be a formidable task.

Hmm. I want to eat the anglerfish pies, or the potato fried fish.
The Iron Chef wins again!
I need an Iron Chef tshirt.

The challenger had six dishes to Morimoto's four. I thought for sure the new guy would win on based on sheer creativity and quantity.

I missed the beginning of the show and now I'm seriously curious about anglerfish. They're those deep sea fish with the dangly glowbulb stalks on their heads and pointy teeth, right? The ones where, as part of mating, the tiny male fish permanently attaches himself to the female and slowly gets absorbed into her body. Gross.

They should have made anglerfish sushi. It would have been like sushi *squared*.

I know! I thought he would win too, just for the nifty things he did. Those little pies were intriguing. I want to try one. A real shame the Food Network doesn't post any Iron Chef recipes. Not that I could truly recreate most of that stuff, but I'd like to try.

The very same fish. I saw one once, in an aquarium in DC near the giant Reagan building.

Turns out that Monkfish is a similar western fish. They live in shallow water don't look quite as ghastly. Seems like people just eat the tail meat, which thanks to the Monkfish's carnivorous bottom-feeding diet tastes a lot like lobster.

The spooky big fanged deepwater ones are still freaking me out. Maybe the Cajuns and Japanese should get together and find a way to cook them up, too.

I have never eaten monkfish, though I would like to sometime. I like all things that come from the ocean. The one exception being sea urchin, but that was more of a texture issue. Of, as soon as I get a job, I will take myself out for sushi.

Deepsea creatures are strange. At the aquarium, they also had sea cockroaches, which the sign claimed came from off the coast of New Zealand. This too, was supposed to taste like lobster.

Now I want to see a Cajun-Japanese Iron Chef battle...
