I went to pick up the mail today, and there was a package for me!

Wrapped in brown paper, with lovely old fashioned looking stamps at the top, and I walked back to my apartment pretending to be living in a Kundera novel or something like that. The sun is beautiful out there, and if I close my eyes and pretend I can smell the lindens blooming the way they did that summer in Prague.

I unwrapped it with far more care than I usually take. Inside was a black box, and I grinned in the silence of the house. This was so much like a novel. Beneath the carefully popped bubble wrap, there was a card from Samantha. She's fast become one of my favorite LJ people to read, and one of my good friends. I just bought some things to send her today, and I can't believe I forgot the stamps. Anyhow, it's a great card, with a cigar and a martini on the front. "Cake is for wussies." In light of last weekend, this is even more funny.

Wrapped in purple and silver ribbon is a copy of Eloise in Moscow! I managed to get the ribbon off without untying it or losing the curls. The book is lovely, a 40th anniversary edition with heavy paper and hardbound. I love well done children's books, and I have a few hidden away between the Dostoevsky and the Pelevin. It's been years since I read Eloise, and they weren't something I ever saw until I was in college. (Yes, I grew up reading odd things)

Thank you, thank you Samantha for the beautiful present, and for the moment walking home where I was in a novel.
