Samantha writes beautifully about the importance of cultural studies and American literature today. Culture is the essential mate to history, and provides us with information documents and timelines can't explain. Culture exposes the soul under history's faltering heartbeat.

I have this vision of Samantha and I in offices across the hall from each other in our ivory tower, running back and forth with books, papers, origami cranes, who knows what.

Probably you mean cranes=birds, but I'm having visions of learning Russian in America when Russia was still just a big part of the USSR and first year students learning words like "female crane operator".

We need to get tenure immediately so that they can't fire us for our madness.
