crazy internet people

My participation in various fandoms has never been very big, with the possible exception of playing Lucius in LN. I've only ever posted one piece of fanfic, an awful little thing probably still up on the net. I really never knew how much fandom existed til I was in my twenties, and mostly I keep my ramblings about characters and stories to myself.

I enjoy a sense of community where and when I find it. But I think I've never been very active because I instinctively shy away from the scary, scary people who seem to gravitate to these places. Granted, there are many perfectly nice and friendly folk I've met in fandoms. But, oh how the other half frightens me.

You can read the fantastic story of LOTR fandom gone bad that is Victoria Bitter. Holy Cow. It's got to be the most amazing, hysterical, disturbing and downright wrong thing I've seen in years. This is exactly why fandoms get a bad rap, crazy people doing batshit awful things like this. This girl needs a nice padded cell and about a decade of therapy. God help her.

It's a trainwreck, and I can't help staring.

There's another post in the f_w community that has links to further goings on with the websites. A link to Tumirel's livejournal where that person details an enormous amount of insanity related to these supposed charity events and conventions organized by these batshit folk, including the thousands of dollars of plane tickets.

That's so appalling.

As many people noted things involving fandom and money ofte go awry -- mainly through ineptness wrather than fraud. I must say, if nothing else i am very proud of the big harry Potter literacy fundraising effort through Leaky Cauldron -- but OH MY GOD.

So reading more of this when I get home

What really freaks me out about this is that these batshit people had contact with Sean Astin and several other people it seems. Which will no doubt make everyone look bad, in that whole "scary internet people thing."

Yeah and did you see Jason Isaacs on Graham Norton?
Baaaad Internet.

I did not see the good Mr Isaacs. What have I missed?

Among other things, his groans at the mention of his Internet fan sites and the woman who has his name tattoo'd across her chest. She sent pictures. Just so he would never forget he has fans. No matter what happens.

Alright, now that's really really wrong.

Yeah, totally.. the whole thing is hysterical though -- someone posted a transcript of it on JF recently. Maybe telesilla, but I am not sure.
