They didn't mean to do it. What happened was that the cat would, uh, finish with the still-living mouse and take it to the the nearest human. This was often Mara, one of the store's owners. Mara would go nuts and run for the nearest glue board, then start chasing the cat around, trying to get the cat to drop it on the board.

The cat, no dummy, quickly figured out what he was supposed to do. He simply skipped the chasing around part and just dropped the mouse on the nearest glue board.
