Grocery shopping is so much more bearable when the store is ghostly. I don't like struggling through the crowds. Today I brought home a pound of smoked salmon, bagels, cream cheese, strawberries, blueberries, orange juice, cereal, salt & vinegar potato chips, and lots of baking supplies.

I've already become enthralled with a half dozen ideas from my new cookbook. This week I'm making meringue fingers dipped in chocolate, and palmiers. If only it wasn't so hot outside, I wouldn't have to wait until nearly midnight to get started on the baking.

The apartment really needs to be cleaned. But Alan's napping in the living room, and it's just too warm to make the effort. Maybe later. For now I'll read the paper and contemplate making fruity shortcakes for dinner.

So sorry I missed you at work. I had trouble finding my keys and missed a bus and missed you by 20 minutes. We should hang out sometime so I can give you hot peppers.

If your supermarket is open 24/7 like the one I worked at in the States, go during the middle of the night. There'll be one cashier and several stockmen, but chances are you'll be the only customer. Unfortunately the deli, butcher, and bakery will be closed but all the off-the-shelf items will be available. You'll aqlso relieve the cashier of his boredom.
