It's all about education, I believe. We need to encourage and build up an educational system that doesn't just teach to tests and score charts. Teaching kids to think objectively, argue rationally and do research seems to have gone out the window. I know my education was certainly lacking in those areas, and I was fortunate enough to go out and find those things for myself. But not everyone is so lucky.
If we teach kids to think globally, to think more about their groups as a whole and how the individual impacts the group and vice versa, if we teach them how to see the impact one group has on another, if we teach them to be concerned with more than what they have and their own personal desires... well, I think the world would be a better place.
With the exception of saints, people are not born unselfish. It's a learned, socialized behaviour.
