to clarify something

threeplusfireI'm not trying to make the statement that I am re-evaluating friendships because others don't make the "right" political decisions or the ones that I want. I am wondering about my friendships because I see how easy it is for other people to devalue and dehumanize other people for their differences. What I see in some of my friends and coworkers is a willingness to see others are less, as not worthy of the same rights, the same protections and the same chances are we are.
To see other people as less worthy of the freedoms granted us by the Constitution, less worthy of the ideals proposed in the Declaration of Independence, and less protected by the laws of our country makes me deeply uneasy.
I know I have a nasty elitest streak in me, and believe me I agonize over the less charitable aspects of my character. But I struggle to remind myself that we're all on this continent together and just because I don't like someone doesn't make them less human. It is so easy to go down that road, and so frightening.
