We had a nice lunch that included tomato basil soup and potato galette at La Madeline this afternoon. Tyler, Melynda and Micha ate baked potato soup. We discussed Melynda's incredibly dim coworker, she who did not know that Joe was short for Joseph or the meaning of the word dishearten. I wonder how people like that survive, much less end up as President.
Afterwards, we trundled over to the Borders across the street so I could pick up some paperbacks and we could play cards in their cafe. Two games of Shanghai Rummy produced innumerable quips, bad jokes and groans. It was quite loud in the cafe, and we heard a number of cell phone ring tones. By far the best, or worst, came from a middle aged man sitting near the back. He had his headphones on and was working on his laptop so his phone rang unchecked for a good twenty seconds or so each time. Shockingly loud, it caused every patron to turn their head in search of this defeaning racket. The ring tone was not just a midi file or screeching beep. It was Avril Lavinge belting out her first radio hit. Such juxtaposition overwhelmed us, and we collapsed in a heap of smothered laughter. Nothing in the world was more amusing at that moment.
