At undergrad, the students were under strict orders not to interfere with the daily doings of the various feral cats about campus, nor were they to adopt them or shoo them away. I don't recall any problems due to mice or rats -- no plague, no rabies, no power outages. If I recall correctly, the people who worked at the Physical Plant left out saucers of milk and pieces of cheese every so often to keep the cats around and mousing.
